Join the Friends of South Whatcom Library Board | Make a Local Impact This Fall

The following letter to the editor was submitted by Friends of the South Whatcom Library for the July 2025 issue of Sudden Valley Views.

To the Editor:

The Friends of the South Whatcom Library Board of Directors is seeking new members to serve two year terms starting in September. There are four open spots on our nine-member board as each year half of the positions retire. Leadership opportunities are available as every year board members are eligible to volunteer for our Executive Board and Committee Chair positions. Everyone is welcome to join our group; bring their unique skill set and enjoy volunteering to make a difference for the community right here in Sudden Valley.

The mission of the Friends of the South Whatcom Library is to enhance library services through support and advocacy, raising awareness of the library’s value in our community.

The Friends group exists to provide financial and volunteer support for our local branch of the Whatcom County Library System.  Our Library serves the community beyond being a place to find the perfect book for a summer read.  Each month the Friends of South Whatcom Library is providing support for special programs such as Summer Reading Kick Off, Whatcom Grooves Summer Concert Series, Nature Journaling and our annual Ice Cream Social as well as supporting monthly ongoing activities such as Story Time, Adult Social Hour, Creative Kits, Lego Time and Book Clubs.  We raise funds through recycling used books, membership dues and local business sponsorships.  Our South Whatcom Library is a special place welcoming people of all ages here in Sudden Valley, but also serves the communities of Glenhaven and Geneva.

As a board member, you will give back to your community, working hand in hand with a group of fun loving active volunteers. The FoSWL BoD meets monthly, and our committees meet separately, usually once per month as well. Come join us, make new friends, and greet your neighbors as we build community through supporting the South Whatcom library.

To learn more and apply for a board position, please email hello@swlfriends.org or call (360) 224-5202 and leave a message with your preferred contact information.  A board member will reach out to you and answer any questions you may have.  Thank you for considering serving our community in this important way!
